Medical Toxicology Residency Read or Print "08-09 MedTox Handbook" Introduction Medical toxicology is a unique and dynamic specialty that combines components of emergency medicine, occupational and environmental medicine, pediatrics, and public health practice. The Medical Toxicology program is sponsored by the HealthPartners Institute for Medical Education and is a two year program. The residency is be based at Regions Hospital and is a collaborative effort between Regions Hospital/HealthPartners, Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC), Midwest Center for Occupational Health and Safety at the University of Minnesota and the Hennepin Regional Poison Center. The residency is affiliated with the Occupational Medicine residency and Emergency Medicine residency at Regions Hospital/HealthPartners. The residents will spend time at Regions on the inpatient toxicology service, the Occupational and Environmental Medicine clinic, the Regions Emergency Department, and will rotate through the Hennepin Regional Poison Center and St. Paul Childrens Hospital. The goal of the residency program is to prepare graduates for leadership positions in clinical toxicology, Poison Centers, public health, academic medicine, governmental, industry and other practice. Each new resident's education, training, and experience is assessed, and then matched with a tailored curriculum. This will maximize the resident's opportunities to achieve excellence in the core medical toxicology competencies outlined by the MT sub-board and to progress in the core competencies outlined by the ACGME. The residency's first year is devoted to developing clinical skills in medical toxicology. The MT resident is involved in a variety of clinical, didactic, and research activities. During the second year, the MT resident will continue to evaluate toxicology cases but can also focus on special interests and research activities. The second year still provides experiences to improve clinical skills but an increased emphasis is placed on educational techniques (writing and speaking) and research methodology. Residency/Fellowship Opportunities In order to be eligible for consideration for admission to the Medical Toxicology Residency/Fellowship program, the candidate needs to have completed an ACGME accredited residency and usually have completed an Emergency Medicine, Occupational Medicine or Pediatrics residency. Applicants must be either a U.S. Citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States. Foreign Medical Graduates “Foreign Medical Graduate candidates must be a graduate of an ACGME-approved residency program, or currently certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) to apply to the Medical Toxicology Program at Regions Hospital. If you meet those qualifications, and after successfully completing our Program, the graduate/candidate will be allowed to sit for the Board Certification examination in Medical Toxicology through the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM).” If you are interested in applying, please contact Deb Collier, Program Assistant at 651-254-1504 or by email at deb.k.collier@healthpartners.com. |
